Activities
sunset over Mount Desert Island The communities of our town offer a great variety of activities from easy to strenuous.

Hiking and biking are the best ways to view the interior of the Island making use of over 100 miles of trails and nearly 50 miles of carriage roads upon which public vehicles are not permitted. The very popular and challenging hike up Norumbega Mountain offers breathtaking views in many directions, so does the hike up Sargeant Mountain. More casual hikers will enjoy the carriage road circumnavigating Little Long Pond in Seal Harbor or a stroll through Thuya Gardens in Northeast Harbor.

Biking is enjoyed on many of the "off roads" and maps should be consulted for approved areas. The Hadlock Pond loop or Day Mountain provide great rides and exercise.

An entirely different perspective of our Island is gained from its many waterways. Fishing and boating enthusiasts alike enjoy fresh and salt water opportunities on the Island's many lakes and ponds as well as along many miles of ocean coastline. We'll be pleased to share approved public launch sites.

A variety of theaters and museums rounds out a nearly endless list of activities awaiting you in this vacationer's paradise, making even rainy days enjoyable.
